I am frequently sharing how much I love reading to my daughter. We read multiple books together every night before bed. We also like to go to the park and lay out under the trees to read during the day now that it’s warming up. As you can see books are a huge part of our daily lives. I have loved building up a collection of children’s books for my daughter. A while ago I shared my all time favorite children’s books from that collection with you. However, our collection has significantly grown since then. That’s why I’ve decided to start a series here on the blog. I will be sharing my top 10 children’s books each month with you. This way I can continue to keep you updated on books Olivia and I are loving as her collection grows. I hope you enjoy!
The Rainbow Fish – This was one of my favorite books when I was a child. So, I was beyond thrilled when I finally was able to add it to Olivia’s collection. The Rainbow Fish is a wonderful story about the importance of sharing. The Rainbow Fish makes friends by sharing his most prized possessions, his shimmering scales, with the other fish. This book features eye catching imagery and a positive message your children will love.
Little Blue Truck – Olivia is becoming very interested in her books now and wanting to explore them more. At this age exploring means they go right in the mouth for a few bites. That’s why I love reading board books. They are built to stand up against babies and toddlers. One of my favorite board books is Little Blue Truck. It’s a charming story about kindness, friendship, and paying it forward. We love this book because it rhymes, has a great message, and it features multiple learning opportunities like identifying animals and their noises.
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom – This is another one of my favorite board books to read to my daughter. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a lively story about some ornery alphabet letters and a race up the coconut tree. This story provides a wonderful opportunity to help your children learn their alphabet. It also teaches the important lesson to get back up and try again when we fall. With its rhythmic text and colorful imagery this story will became a fan favorite in no time.
The Day the Crayons Quit – Our daughter received this book as a gift this month from her Nana and it has quickly become a favorite. This is one of those books that never gets old. The Day the Crayons Quit features a little boy named Duncan who has to solve a very big problem. His crayons have all decided to quit! He must think outside of the box to solve everyone’s complaints if he wants them to come back. Both parents and children will love reading the various letters the crayons have wrote to Duncan. My favorite part of the book is the beautiful drawing Duncan has created in the end. It is likely to spark creativity in every child who reads it.
5 Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice – We introduced this book to our daughter around Christmas time and it is still going strong. 5 Little Penguins is a fun wintery take on the classic story of 5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed. You will enjoy the fun imagery as you read about 5 little penguins slipping, sliding, and falling in the winter weather. Not only is this story a fun read, but it is also a great teaching tool to use when learning numbers.
The Pout Pout Fish – This is one of my favorite board books to read to my daughter. The Pout Pout Fish tells a story about a fish who believes his destiny is to spread the “dreary wearies all over the place.” However, after another fish shows him his true purpose in life his perspective changes completely. His new positive outlook on life takes him from being a glum, grumpy fish to one of the happiest fish in the ocean. This is an excellent story about how the way we look at ourselves becomes the way the rest of the world sees us. It also shows our children how one act of kindness can change another person’s life. This is a great read and one that I am looking forward reading to my daughter as she grows.
Giraffes Can’t Dance – I bought this board book on the recommendation of a friend and I am so glad I did. It has a wonderful message that I am so happy I get to share with my daughter. Giraffes Can’t Dance tells the story of Gerald the giraffe who loves to dance, but is picked on and shunned by the other animals. Eventually he meets a friendly cricket who teaches him that it’s okay to be different. He gives Gerald the confidence he needs to get his thin legs and wobbly knees moving. I love that this book teaches children that it’s okay to be different. It doesn’t matter what other people think of you. As long as you believe in yourself there is nothing you can’t do.
I’m Going to Give You a Bear Hug – My husband bought this book for our daughter and it has quickly become his favorite. It is his top choice to read on the nights he puts her to bed. I’m Going to Give You a Bear Hug uses whimsical rhymes to share all the different ways to give a hug and receive hugs. Your child will love the different animals, rhymes, and illustrations. However, they will love all the extra snuggles this book brings even more. This is the perfect excuse to get extra hugs and cuddles before bed.
Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast – We purchased this book while I was still pregnant with Olivia for me to read to my belly. Reading to the bump was one of my favorite ways to bond with Olivia during pregnancy. I may have loved it then, but I am loving it so much more now. It always brings a big grin to her face usually accompanied by some giggles. Lady Pancake & Sir French Toast tells the story of two friends who start the ultimate food fight over the last drop of syrup. Read along as they race through the fridge, past orange juice fountain, and over sauerkraut peak in search of the syrup. No spoilers here! You’ll have to buy the book to see who wins.
My Mommy is Magic – With Mother’s Day being this month I couldn’t help but purchase this book. I am so glad I decided to add it to our collection. I just love the magical way it portrays the relationship between children and their mothers. My Mommy is Magic talks about all of the magical ways moms take care of their children. We magically make pain from cuts and bruises disappear. We cook yummy meals that do magic in one’s tummy. Moms even have a magical way of making everything fun! This book is a wonderful way to celebrate all of the magic of mom.
