Everyone loves to shop for a newborn baby. After all, there’s no better feeling then picking out sweet clothes, colorful toys, and tiny newborn diapers. People love to give these gifts during baby showers or when they meet the baby for the first time. These gifts are extraordinarily generous and always appreciated. However, I prefer to bring a gift to someone who gets a bit neglected during this time – the mama. It’s easy for mom to get outshined by her baby during this time. However, it’s important to remember she did all the work. She could use a bit of spoiling herself. That’s why I always bring a new mom gift basket when I visit.
This new mom gift basket is an excellent way to make a new mom feel appreciated and loved. It includes a few items to make her postpartum period more comfortable and of course more enjoyable. I’ll list out below the items I recommend using to fill up your basket. However, before we get started on the inside it’s important to talk about the outside. When choosing your basket it’s important to think about more than just looks. Choose a basket that is practical. You could use a small laundry basket that she could repurpose in the baby’s room. You could also choose a larger wooden or fabric basket that could be used to store blankets or toys. There are plenty of different options out there that are both practical and esthetically pleasing.
Water cup – After they give birth, a mother will be encouraged to drink a large amount of water. Staying hydrated is an extremely important part of postpartum recovery. Water is great at promoting healing, but it is also great at increasing milk supply. Some people are great at getting the proper amount of water, but most of us are not. However, it’s always more fun to drink water when it comes from a fun cup. That’s why in my new mom gift baskets I always add a fun water cup to inspire proper hydration.
Dry Shampoo – Finding the time to take a proper shower can be difficult as a new mom. It’s hard enough to set aside time to wash your body – let alone your hair. That’s why I find dry shampoo to be the perfect gift for a new mom. It’s a great quick fix to help them feel put together and ready to tackle the day.
Journal – Those first few months fly by for new moms. Moms want to remember every moment and truly believe that they will. However, sleep deprivation takes a toll on a person and it’s easy to forget the little moments. That’s why I always add a cute journal to my new mom gift basket. This way they can write down all of the little milestones, the special memories, and the emotions that come with them. This will be a gift they truly cherish when they look back on this special time in their life.
Tissues – The postpartum period will be filled with a lot of tears for a new mom. There will be tears of absolute exhaustion when she gets up for the fourth time that night to feed. There will be tears of excitement when she sees her baby do something new. Let’s not forget the tears of sadness when she realizes her baby is growing up way to quickly. See, I told you there would be a lot of tears. After all, it’s a pretty emotional time. That’s why it’s important to include a couple of packages of tissues in your gift basket. Trust me, they will all get used.
Epsom Salts – Epsom salt baths are amazing for postpartum moms. Not only are they a great way to encourage relaxation and self care. They are also an excellent way to promote healing if she had a vaginal delivery. Your new mom gift basket will include a lot of fun want items. However, it’s also important to add a few items that fill the “need” category. The epsom salts do just that!
Snacks – A new mom has a lot on her plate. After all, she is taking care of a new tiny human. She’s trying to balance feeding her baby, taking care of the home, taking care of herself, and finding a bit of sleep. Unfortunately, that means a few things might be forgotten. All too often, a new mom will forget to take the time to eat. That’s why I like to add a few snacks to my new mom gift baskets. Be sure to choose snacks that are quick and easy to eat. I prefer using granola bars, trail mix, and crackers for example. Having snacks readily available makes it much easier to grab a quick bite to eat when possible.
Starbucks Gift Card – You may have caught onto the fact that moms don’t get much sleep. It’s true! In the beginning, a new mom will wake up approximately every three to four hours to feed her baby. You also must factor in time for diaper changes, burping, and rocking baby to sleep. That doesn’t leave much time for a mom to get the rest she needs. That’s why caffeine is a lifesaver for moms. I always include a Starbucks gift card in my new mom gift basket.
Magazines – New moms have a lot of downtime where they are stuck in one place. For example, when their baby will only sleep on them they can be stuck in the chair for over an hour. A great way to fill that time is with reading. Moms often gravitate towards parenting books as their choice for reading. Parenting books are so helpful to new parents. However, I like to gift a piece of reading material that is a bit lighter. I recommend adding a magazine tailored towards their interests into their gift basket. This will help them fill their downtime in a light and enjoyable way.
Cozy Clothes – The wardrobe for a new mom should include all things comfy and cozy. After all, they are recovering from giving birth to a child. Being comfortable is probably the number one priority in choosing clothing. However, it’s also important for a new mom to feel cute and stylish. That’s why I like to add a piece of comfortable, cozy, and cute clothing to my gift baskets. If you can find something that is mom themed, then you’ve really found a great piece. Be sure to select something that is flattering for her postpartum body. You’ll want a piece that she feels beautiful and confident wearing.
Wine – After nine months of being alcohol free, it’s only natural that a new mom might want to enjoy some of her favorite wine. So, go ahead and treat her by adding her favorite bottle of wine to her gift basket. Trust me, after a long day with her baby it will mean more to her than you know. It’s so nice to be able to pour a glass of wine, sit down, relax, and decompress. It’s the perfect finishing touch to your new mom gift basket.
