From the moment you find out you’re pregnant you will be wondering if that little baby inside you is a girl or a boy. The only way to know for sure what you are having is to wait until your 20 week ultrasound. However, it is still fun to try and guess up until then. I loved testing out different gender prediction theories when I was pregnant with Olivia. I’m so excited to share with you 10 of my favorite wives tales for gender prediction. I’m also going to share how these wives tales stood up against my pregnancy. We’re they accurate or did they let me down? Keep on reading to see! Remember, these are just fun wives tales about gender prediction and there is absolutely no science behind them.
Baby’s Heart Rate – One of the most popular gender prediction wives tales focuses on the baby’s heart rate. If your baby’s heart rate is over 140 signs point to a girl. If it is under 140 it looks like you’ve got a baby boy on your hands. Olivia’s heart rate was over 140 at every doctors appointment so this wives tale was accurate for her.
Morning Sickness – It is believed that excessive nausea and vomiting is linked to girls. While baby boys tend to be an easier pregnancy morning sickness wise. This one was also true for my pregnancy with Liv. I had terrible morning sickness with her. In fact, I was still vomiting the morning I went in for my c-section.
Carrying High vs. Low – You’ll want to take a good look in the mirror for this gender prediction wives tale. They say that carrying high means you’re having a girl, while carrying low equals boy. This is another one that was true for me. I feel like I carried Olivia pretty high.
Ring Test – This is a fun test way to try and predict the gender of your baby. Tie your ring on a string and hang it over your belly. If it swings in a circular motion you are having a girl. If it swings side to side then you are having a boy. I didn’t try the ring test with my first pregnancy. However, I definitely want to try it with my next one for fun.
Pregnancy Glow – Is your skin clear and bright and your hair resembling a shampoo commercial? If so, it is thought that you are having a girl. However, if you are struggling with breakouts and dry hair you might be having a boy. A common joke among moms is that baby girls steal mom’s beauty. Is that true for you? This was another one that was true for me. I have never struggled with breakouts until I was pregnant – Thanks Olivia!
Sweet vs. Salty – What are your cravings like during pregnancy? If you are craving all the sweet things than signs point to a little girl. On the other hand, if your cravings are for salty snacks than you might have a little boy. This was 100% accurate for me. I craved all the sweet stuff during my pregnancy and I ended up having a little girl.
Moody or Mellow – This gender prediction wives tale is all about personality. If you find yourself feeling easily agitated and grumpy than you might be having a girl. However, if you are more relaxed and chill than it looks like you have a little boy. I hate to admit it, but I was a grumpy monster during my pregnancy with Olivia. Let’s just blame it on the excessive morning sickness.
Partner’s Weight Gain – Does dad seem to be eating for two these days as well? According to this wives tale you may be carrying a girl if your partner is gaining weight along with you. This one was not accurate for us. Anthony has always had better eating habits than me and he continued to eat great during my pregnancy.
Clumsy or Graceful – Some people are always clumsy – like myself. However, it is believed that if your clumsiness gets even worse during pregnancy than you are having a boy. If you still have some control left over your body than you’ve got a little girl on your hands. This one was hard for me to judge because I am always extremely clumsy. It’s hard for me to believe it could get any worse than normal. However, I was slightly clumsier during pregnancy which led to some pretty hilarious bloopers. So, I would have to say that this particular wives tale was incorrect for me.
The Linea Nigra – The dark line that women get on their bellies, known as the Linea Nigra, is apparently a sign of the babies gender. It is believed that if the line runs from your navel down to your public bone than you are having a girl. On the other hand, if the line runs from your navel up to your rib cage then you are having a boy. My Linea Nigra ran from my belly button down to my pubic bone and I had a girl, so this wives tale was true.
