Toys may seem like more of a want than a need for baby’s first year. This is especialily true if money is already tight. Many people view baby toys as just a fun way to keep their child occupied and happy thoughout the day. Howver, they are so much more than that. Toys can be a great tool in fostering both mental and physical development thoughout the year if chosen correctly. They truly are a great resource.
Baby toys do serve many purposes throughout the first year. However, it can be quite difficult for many parents to justify the expense for them. Especially because children go through phases so quickly. What was their favorite toy last week will soon gather dust as it becomes forgotten. I firmly believe that toys don’t have to be expensive to be fun. Many of my daughter’s favorite toys were fairly inexpensive.
So, today I have put together a list of my top 10 baby toys that I bought for $10 or less. All of these toys can be found on Amazon. If you have Amazon Prime you can even get free shipping which lowers the cost even more! Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial. Children don’t understand prices. They only understand fun. Toys don’t have to cost a fortune to become a favorite.
B.Funkeys Lights & Sounds Toy Keys – It’s no secret that babies love car keys. That’s why they are a baby toy staple. What makes these keys so special is that they are the most realistic to yours. These keys feature the same shiny metal that yours have. They also have a few buttons that will make various noises when pressed including horn, alarm, and engine start. They even have a button that can be used as a flashlight. These keys are a great toy to toss in the diaper bag to help keep your baby entertained while on the road.
Sassy Wonder Wheel – The Sassy Wonder Wheel is by far the most popular toy in our house. It is meant to be suctioned onto a table, high chair, or activity center. However, your baby will love it so much that they will probably want to play with it even when it isn’t attached to a surface. Babies will love spinning the wheel around. It’s a blast to watch the beads run through the wheel. It’s also a great opportunity for them to practice their motor skills. One of my favorite times to use this toy is when we go out to eat. I simply attach it to the table for my daughter to play with. It helps keep her occupied while we wait for the food to come.
Maracas – A good set of maracas make the perfect rattle for your baby. They also are the best way to introduce musical instruments to your little one. My favorite aspect of this set is that they are perfect size. They are fairly small which makes it easy to fit them in the diaper bag. Their handles are also the perfect size for little hands to grasp. So, grab a pair for your baby and let them shake away. I can guarantee you it will be a blast.
O Ball 1-Piece Rattle & Roll Car – Oball is one of my favorite toy companies for babies. One of my favorite products that they make is their Rattle and Roll Car. These cars are easy for little hands to grab because of the traditional Oball portion on top. It is made of a soft and flexible material perfect for those little fingers. Your little one can easily grab on and roll it all over the house. The wheels are filled with fun colorful beads which are a blast to watch roll around as the car moves.
Bright Starts Lots of Links – A set of ring links is an essential addition to every child’s toy box. They may not look like much of a toy. However, there are actually a ton of uses for these links if you just get a little creative. They are great to add to an activity mat to help toys hand lower so your baby can grab them easier. I also like to use them on the handle of an infant seat. You can use them on their own or attach toys to them. This is a great hack to help make car rides go a bit smoother for everyone. Another great option is to hook them together and give them to your child to play with. Try to look for ones make with different colors and textures. Your baby will love exploring them and probably even use them as a teether.
Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Musical Toy – This is a wonderful toy to add to your collection. It’s a simple toy, yet it can keep your baby’s attention for hours. Simply push the middle button to play a variety of lullabies. The screen will light up once the music starts. My daughter loves watching the lights change while listening to some of her favorite songs.
Fisher Price Rock a Stack – Every child should have a ring stacker in their toy collection. It’s a classic! I can still remember playing with mine. Ring stackers are a great way for babies to work on their motor skills while they practice stacking the rings. This is also a great opportunity to teach them about relative size as well as colors. I actually prefer the classic Fisher Price Rock a Stack over the new wooden ring stacks. The base on this stacker is thicker than the more modern designs making it harder for them to push down their throat when teething on it. The Rock a Stack also features rattling beads inside the top ring which is a fun new addition.
Bright Starts Clack and Slide Activity Ball – The Bright Starts activity ball is a great way to keep your child entertained as it offers many ways to play. Your baby can easily practice grasping and passing from hand to hand with this toy. They will enjoy spinning the beads and moving them up and down throughout their section. There is even a fun mirrored piece attached.
Infantino Sparkle Topsy Turtle Mirror Pal – The Topsy Turtle is deisgned to be attached to the handle of your child’s infant car seat. It is by far one of my favorite car seat toys on the market. The feet rattle when they get hit which is a blast for little ones. The belly is mirrored so your baby can explore their facial features while hanging out in their seat. This toy hangs down quite a bit farther than other car seat toys I’ve tried which makes it much easier for little hands to explore. However, if it’s still a bit too high you can always use some of the ring links I mentioned above to help it sit lower.
Infantino Textured Multi Ball Set – Infantino’s textured ball set is a great way to add some sensory play into your baby’s day. This set comes with 6 balls of different size, shape, texture, and color. They are soft which makes it easy for little hands to pick up and manipulate. I’ve tried other ball sets on the market that are a bit firmer (more like a dog toy material) and those are hard for babies to squeeze and play with. You could use these during free play for your child or do more structed activities as well. Try placing the balls in a muffin pan. Allow your baby to take them out and explore, then teach them how to put them back in.
