Hi friends! As you all know, I recently shared some of my favorite baby products for Olivia from 0-3 months. I love getting to share all of my favorite products with you guys. However, I feel that I also have a responsibility to share the products I don’t necessarily love with you too. I want you to be able to make the most informed decisions you can when it comes to your little ones. That is why I made a list of the baby products I regret buying so far. I also included the products that I used as an alternative to the product that I didn’t enjoy to help guide you in your search.
It is important to remember that every baby is different. So, the baby products that I regret buying you might actually love and vice versa. The following product reviews are simply my opinion and nothing more. I am of course not an expert in raising babies. I’m just a new mama trying to share my experiences with all of you. So, I hope you all enjoy my list of baby products I regret buying.
The Diaper Genie is at the top of my list of baby products I regret buying. I know I am probably in the minority here, but I am just not a fan of this product. First of all, I hate the idea of having to buy specialized trash bags. It’s just one more thing I need to add to my list and honestly it just feels like a huge waste of money. I also have an issue with the mechanism used to cut the trash bags. It never works for me and it always ends up tearing the bag instead of cutting it.
I eventually gave up on trying to get the Dipaer Genie to work and ordered an Ubbi Diaper Pail. I love the Ubbi 1000x more than the Diaper Genie. One of the best aspects of it is that it uses regular trash bags!! That is a huge money saver. I also love that the lid slides open and closed. It is so easy to just toss a diaper in there while keeping one hand and eye on my little one. It does come with a lever to lock the lid in the closed position in case you have a curious toddler.
Some people complain of the smell however I haven’t had any issues controlling it. We use Hefty Ultra Strong Scented Trash Bags and drop a couple Arm & Hammer Nursery Fresheners in the bottom and it works perfectly for us. I love love love the Ubbi and can’t recommend it enough.
I was extremely disappointed when I tried Huggies diapers on Olivia. They were such poor quality that Olivia would leak through them in just hours. There was no way that she would make it overnight. For the price of these diapers I would expect more than that.
I decided to give Luvs diapers a shot and boy am I glad I did. These diapers are a fraction of the cost of Huggies, but the quality is 10x better. I have been using Luvs on Oliva for a little over 3 months now and the only time she has leaked through is when I needed to up her a size. No blowouts, no leaks, and low cost – it doesn’t get any better than that!
Parent’s Choice Wipes
I had received a few boxes of Parent’s Choice wipes as gifts when I was pregnant with Olivia. I was so excited to use them because they were more cost effective than the name brand baby wipes. However, I found Parent’s Choice wipes to be thin, dry, and difficult to use. It would sometimes take four or five wipes to clean a regular dirty diaper! They also would stick like glue to the wipe underneath so I was always pulling them apart as I went.
I switched Olivia to Pamper’s Sensitive wipes and I am so glad I did. Yes, they are more expensive, but they are 10x better quality. They are so soft on my little girls bottom and never cause diaper rash. It only takes a couple of wipes at most to clean a dirty diaper. I can’t say enough good things about Pamper’s Sensitive wipes. They are worth every penny. Sometimes, you really do get what you pay for.
Olivia really hated when we used cold wipes on her when she was a newborn. So, naturally I felt that I NEEDED a wipe warmer. I honestly thought I couldn’t live without one. However, that wipe warmer that I so desperately needed is still sitting in it’s box at the back of Olivia’s closet. Warming the wipe between my hands works just as well. Honestly, the older Olivia gets the less and less she minds a cold wipe. In the end the wipe warmer was just a waste of money. I honestly will probably just end up using it to warm up my make-up wipes so I get some use out of it.
Dreft Laundry Detergent
I can’t tell you how many people told me that I must use Dreft laundry detergent to wash my baby’s clothes. There just was no other way to properly do it! However, I found Dreft to be just another over priced and overrated product, which is why it is on my list of baby products I regret buying. I don’t think that it is very effective at removing stains – even common stains like spit up. It never seemed to get my daughter’s clothes clean enough.
So, I did the unthinkable and starting using our detergent (Tide Original) on Olivia’s clothes. It worked wonders on getting out all of the spit up stains from her clothes. It also never caused any irritation on her skin and she has super sensitive skin. So, moral of the story – don’t feel like you have to use a baby specific laundry detergent. Give your own laundry detergent a shot and see how it holds up.
Tommee Tippee Bottles
I was so excited when I received the Tommee Tippee bottles off my registry. I had read such great things about these bottles. They had an anti colic value, were shaped for breastfed babies, were easy to clean (only 3 parts), and were easy for baby to hold. I couldn’t think of a better bottle. However, these bottles did not live up to all the hype. Therefor, they landed themselves a well deserved spot on my list of baby products I regret buying.
I have a variety of issues with the Tommee Tippee bottles. They are advertised as an anti colic bottle, but they only aggravated my daughter’s gas problems instead of alleviating them. She had a really difficult time getting a good latch on this bottle which caused her in suck in an excess amount of air. More air meant more bicycle kicks after the bottles which is no fun for anyone. I also found that the unique shape of the bottle actually made a feeding quite difficult. The milk would get stuck in all of the bottle’s curves. So, I would have to remove the bottle from my daughter’s mouth and shake the milk down to the nipple towards the end of the feeding to avoid wasting any. Try taking a hungry kid’s bottle away from them – it’s not pretty.
I switched Olivia to Playtex Ventaire bottles per the recommendation of her doctor and they work great for us! They have helped eliminate almost all of her gas problems. She has no problem getting a perfect latch each feeding. We are a huge advocate for these bottles.
Bumbo Floor Seat
In theory the Bumbo Floor Seat is an excellent product. Our daughter loved sitting – it was her favorite activity! Once she had good head control I purchased the Bumbo so that she could sit in it during parts of the day so my arms could get a break. However, there’s a reason it is on my list of baby products I regret buying. It is so hard to get a good fit for your baby in. The leg openings are way too small. Even at 4 months, which is about the earliest you would start using a product like this, the seat was too small. Her legs would get red marks on them after being in there for only ten minutes. She just seems to be uncomfortable the entire time I have her in there.
We decided to give the Sit-Me-Up Floor Seat by Fischer Price a shot as a second option. My daughter actually loves this seat! It is much more supportive than the Bumbo and much more comfortable. I also love that it has a couple of toys attached to it for her to play with. This is the perfect product for her to hang out in while I get a couple of things done like taking a shower.
Graco Simple Sway Swing
I was really excited when I received the Graco Simple Sway Swing as a gift for Olivia. I was so sure she would love it when we brought her home from the hospital. However, it just never really worked for her. We tried for about 4 months to get her to like it, but eventually we just gave up and sold it.
There were a few issues I had with this swing that caused it to be on my list of baby products I regret buying. It was really difficult to get a secure fit in. I ended up buying another head support pillow to add in. It also makes this awful loud clunking noise when you turn it up to higher speeds. I think we might have had a faulty motor because as Olivia got larger, but still well within the weight limits, the swing would really struggle to get going and would just give up all together sometimes.
I ended up buying a Rock N’ Play for Olivia to use and it was a hit! We went through an awful colicky period with her and one of the only things that would calm her down was her Rock N’ Play. It was a godsend! The gentle bouncing motion put her to sleep every time.
Was there anything on my list of baby products I regret buying that you disagree with? Are there any products that you dislike that you think I should consider adding to my list. Let me know!
