Hi friends! Today I am welcoming a guest blogger onto the blog. Alex is the owner of a small cleaning company based in London as well as a mother. She is here to share her expertise on how to properly clean children’s toys. I know this is something I have struggled with, so I hope she will be able to help you as well. Enjoy!
We realize how busy people are. Especially if they have little children. Bottles and diapers are already time consuming enough. Then, what do you do when it comes to all of the toys that have fully overtaken the floors? Yes, we mean the toys that your child loves to bring everywhere and then instinctively put in their mouths. Dirty toys can be extremely harmful. To prevent bacteria from taking over your children’s toys you need to clean the toys at least once per month. Here I will give you several pieces of advice on how to properly, but safely clean your kids’ toys.
How to clean toys in the washing machine
It is a good fortune that you can clean most of the plush toys right in the washing machine. Just make sure that you check the labels in case there are more specific instructions. You don’t want your child to be devastated when their lovely kitty starts to look more like an alien, do you? You can wash toys made of plastic by simply putting them in a mesh bag.
How to clean toys with bleach
If you are washing the toys, add only a half cup of bleach to the washing machine. You could wash them in the dishwasher as well. If you would prefer to soak them directly in the sink, add a half cup of bleach per gallon of water. Let the toys soak for a couple of minutes. Then, simply rinse them with lukewarm water.
There are some parents who use plastic bins to collect toys that have been polluted. When a toy gets dropped on the floor it gets placed in the bin where kids cannot get to it. Then, parents simply add the bleach and water straight into the bin for a much easier cleanup.
How to clean toys with vinegar
Many housewives use vinegar as a natural cleaner. No doubt, vinegar is a very effective ingredient we should all have in our homes. One of the many great uses of vinegar is that it can be used to clean children’s toys. Simply mix equal parts of white vinegar and water. Then, spray the dirty toys with the solution and let them sit for a couple of minutes before rinsing. To minimize the strong smell of vinegar be sure to rinse thoroughly. Vinegar works great with plastic toys. However, plush toys should just be placed in the washing machine.
How to clean toys in the dishwasher
Another method for cleaning toys is using the dishwasher. A dishwasher detergent and hot water are powerful enough to kill the hefty bacteria. If you don’t have a dishwasher, you can always wash the toys by hand in the sink. It is better to separate toys with electronic components and wash them on their own.
How to clean outdoor toys
Most kids love playing outside. Usually, a sandbox can keep kids busy for hours. Sometimes even a simple bucket filled with water is enough to keep them entertained. Keeping areas like play houses, sandboxes, gyms, and other outdoor play areas free of bacteria is extremely important. This is why it is necessary to sanitize these areas every so often. Fortunately, wet wipes and spray sanitizer are enough. Another effective method to clean outdoor equipment is by washing with hot soapy water and then rinsing with the garden house.
How to clean secondhand toys
There is absolutely nothing wrong with purchasing secondhand toys for your children. However, if you do purchase a toy secondhand you will want to make sure to sanitize it before giving it to your kids. Luckily, they are easy to clean. Simply clean with a weak bleach solution and then rinse.
- Permanent marker can be removed with toothpaste.
- Wooden toys can also be cleaned with a solution of water and vinegar.
- Ink stains can be removed from plastic toys with pimple cream.
- Crayon can be removed from books with a kneaded eraser.
